About the Club
Raising money for Charity is something we take seriously, the way we go about raising it however is a very different matter. We have a plethora of events and socials that we are taking part in this year in order to raise as much money as we can.
Last years Charity Secretary Ruan Shah set himself high goals and targets and it’s safe to say he did a fantastic job raising over £4500 by organising pub quizzes and other various event such as our famous SUDEP charity hockey day as well as dribbling a hockey ball up the Yorkshire 3 peaks alongside other club members. This resulted in LUUMHC being shortlisted for best fundraising by Leeds University Union in the Riley’s awards.
This years Charity Secretary is Max Galla. Max is hoping to build another successful year of charity events such as taking part in ‘Tough Mudder’ and even persuade some our boys to do a charity cycle to Prague. Our aim is to ensure that LUUMHC is recognised as one of the leading fundraising clubs within the University.
Future Charity Events…
Leeds Half Marathon: http://www.runforall.com/half-marathon/leeds/
LUUMHC Pub Quiz: Taking inspiration from our partners in crime LUUWHC (http://luuwhc.com) we decided it would be a good idea to form a charity pub quiz and raise money for the causes we support.
Movember: This is a given. How often do you get the chance to pathetically adorn your top lip with pubey facial hair? Well, once again we grow mo’s for prostate cancer in association with our ever loyal Strawbs Bar (). The money we raise is matched by half by the delightful duo that is Kev & Yvette at LUUMHC’s favourite boozing spot.
Channel Row: A new event that sees member take to the rowing machines at the Edge and row the length of the channel. Pretty self explanatory really, but with that little twist that makes just that little bit more superior.
Mixed Hockey Tournament
The 2013/14 1st team captain Simon Hanley organised the first LUUMHC/WHC mixed hockey tournament at the very end of last season. With a small entry fee (which included a free pint) university student across a variety of sports flocked to Weetwood to take part in this day of larks. with 12 teams of 8-12 players the 7-a-side tournament was an absolute sell out and the club raised £549. Hopefully this will be a tournament that continues year on year and builds in popularity.
Leeds Half Marathon
This year some of our boys abandoned their sticks & astros for running shoes to take past in the famous Leeds Half Marathon. The boys did a fantastic job in the race and raising money for charity and were a great representation for our club.
Danny ‘Begbie’ Shaw – 1hr25.48
Will ‘Worms’ Kenney-Herbert – 1hr25.44
Rob Clarke – 1hr56 (in possibly the worst running shoes ever seen and 0 practice runs – not too shabby).
Date Unknown and more information to follow…
The month of November sees our club members grow their facial hair in the aid of Prostate cancer. Year on year we see some amazing attempts as well as some down right disgraceful attempts from some of our ‘less mature’ lads However it always is a successful month which last year saw us raise more than £400 for charity. Last year the theme for the final week was ‘Mexicans and Nachos’ and saw some very noble attempts at becoming tortilla chips. This year, we continued this theme and raised £300 for prostate cancer UK.
Charity Pub Quiz
A working progress and date still TBC but an exciting concept where no doubt we will have a beer.
The charity secretaries for both LUUMHC and LUUWHC put their heads together and decided that a mixed dodgeball tournament would be a good idea for some club bonding. The lads are all keen for this show of masculinity and ego shedding. Date also TBC but details will follow.
